Nishi Chaya District is one of Kanazawa’s representative tea house districts. On its streets lined with beautiful tea house buildings with lattice windows, there’s still a nostalgic charm in the air.

Compared to Higashi Chaya District, it has a calmer atmosphere, making it enjoyable to stroll slowly while taking in the scenery. You can reflect on the city’s historic tea house culture or enjoy Japanese sweets and local treats, spending a uniquely Kanazawa-style time.

It’s a place where you can feel the quiet charm of Kanazawa, something you wouldn’t experience just by visiting the more bustling tourist spots.

And after enjoying your walk, head to Nomachi Station on the nearby Hokuriku Railway Ishikawa Line. From there, hop on the local train on the "Hakusan Geopark Line" and ride to Tsurugi, where the scenery shifts from the city to the satoyama countryside, alive with the nature of Mount Hakusan and its culture of prayer.

After savoring Kanazawa’s atmosphere, you can discover the stories of Mount Hakusan beyond. Why not set off on a little train journey starting from Kanazawa, a trip with a twist on the usual?

Tsurugi Station, the final stop on the Hokuriku Railway Ishikawa Line, also known as the 'Hakusan Geopark Line.' This is the starting point for a journey to the foot of Mount Hakusan. The retro station building welcomes visitors as they arrive.

Tsurugi has a long history as the gateway to Hakusan faith. It has prospered as a temple town in front of Shirayama Hime Shrine and Kinken-gu, as well as a post town bustling with people and goods passing through.

Even today, traditional townhouses and shops remain, and the town flows at a relaxed pace, different from the hustle and bustle of central Kanazawa.

As you walk through the town, you can encounter fermentation culture in the form of sake, soy sauce, and koji, nurtured along with the rich water blessed by Hakusan.

From the station, renting a bicycle and exploring the town is also recommended.

Whether visiting Shirayama Hime Shrine, strolling through the historic streets, or discovering local flavors and crafts, there are many ways to enjoy your time here.

Just a short trip on the local line from Kanazawa, you can reach Tsurugi, a town where prayer, water, and the lives of the people come alive.

Now, get off the train and embark on a journey at the foot of the sacred Mount Hakusan.

A single drop of water flowing from the mountains supports the vast farmland and the lives of people.

In Tsurugi, Hakusan City, there is the 'Shichika-yousui Water Channel Outlet .' This is an important point in the journey of the water from the sacred Mount Hakusan, flowing from the Tedori River into the Kanazawa Plain.

About 150 years ago, during the Meiji era, in order to secure a stable supply of agricultural water, our ancestors undertook a major project to integrate the intake points of seven waterways. The Tedori River’s Shichika-yousui, developed in this way, has supported agriculture and people's lives in the Kanazawa Plain and has greatly contributed to the region's development.

Around the water intake, there are facilities such as stone and brick sluices and tunnels that still convey the civil engineering techniques of the Meiji era. These intake facilities were designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 2023.

At the Shirayama Management Center near the Water Channel Outlet, you can learn about the history, structure, and maintenance work of Shichigayosui.

In the exhibition room, there are panels and other displays introducing the achievements of the predecessors who contributed to the creation of Shichigayosui and the efforts made to deliver water steadily. It makes you realize that the water we use casually every day is protected by a long history and people's hard work.

The water produced by Hakusan’s nature and the wisdom of the people who utilized it—if you visit here, the town of Tsurugi and the Tedori River alluvial fan (Kanazawa Plain) landscapes might look different from usual.

The pure water source, the sacred mountain Hakusan. You can feel the hearts of the people who have prayed on this mountain.

If you take a short trip from the town of Tsurugi, you'll find a sacred space surrounded by deep greenery. Shirayama Hime Shrine, the head shrine of about 3,000 Hakusan shrines all over Japan. Locals affectionately call it 'Shirayama-san.'

The enshrined deity is Shirayama Hime no Okami, also known as Kukuri Hime no Mikoto, a goddess. Since ancient times, people have revered Mount Hakusan as a sacred mountain, offering thanks for nature’s blessings and water, making this shrine the center of Hakusan faith.

Walk the cedar-lined path and clear your mind.

Step onto the main approach, and towering, ancient trees surround you, filling the air with calmness and freshness. As you walk slowly, you feel yourself stepping away from everyday noise, your mind gradually at peace.

When visiting, put your hands together at the shrine and offer your thanks for Hakusan’s nature and your daily life.

Kukuri Hime no Mikoto has also long been worshiped as a deity connecting people with each other. Travelers praying for safety or good relationships also visit here.

The culture of prayer nurtured by Hakusan’s water.

Hakusan is a mountain whose snowmelt waters nourish the land, support fields, and sustain people's lives. The water supply inlet of Shichigayousui that we visited earlier is also a place that shows the blessings of Hakusan’s water and the wisdom of the people who have preserved it.

At Shirayama Hime Shrine, you encounter a culture of prayer that respects the source of this water and expresses gratitude for nature’s blessings.

At the foot of the sacred Mount Hakusan, accessible by a local train from Kanazawa, you can quietly put your hands together and feel the stories of prayers that live in this land.

After spending a quiet prayer time at Hakusan Hime Shrine, the next step is Shishiko Highlands.

Heading to the summit by gondola, you'll be greeted by the beautiful Tedori River alluvial fan formed by the flow of water from Mount Hakusan.

Shishiko Highlands is also known as a famous spot for paragliding.

With a tandem flight, you can enjoy an aerial walk with an instructor.

The Tedori River Alluvial Fan, where water flowing from Mount Hakusan has nourished the land and nurtured people's daily lives. Looking at its scenery, the town of Tsurugi, the Shichikairi Canal, and Hakusan Hime Shrine that you have visited so far all seem connected as one grand story.

At the foot of Shishiko Highlands, the 'Shishi World Hall' and the 'Artifacts House' are also hidden gems where you can enjoy them.

Take a commemorative photo in front of the world's largest hand-carved lion head.

The Tedori River, which originates from the mountains of Hakusan, has, over many years, carved the land and created a dramatic gorge.

Wataga-taki, located in the Tedori Gorge, is a spot where you can feel the power of nature up close.

The water rushes down from a height of about 32 meters, crashing against the rocks and creating white splashes that look like cotton, which is how it supposedly got its name.

On a short trip from Kanazawa to Hakusan City, we saw landscapes and moments of reflection shaped by water.

Here, you can encounter the sheer force of nature generated by the river's flow itself.

A journey following Hakusan’s water story: as you think about the sacred Hakusan mountains that are the source, try listening to the sound of the water echoing through the gorge.
